Looking for a St. Pete sourdough bakery with real heart? Meet The Golden Grain, a family-run cottage bakery owned by Arica Fernandez, a wife, a mom of four, and a lover of all things farm life. A few years ago, she would have laughed at the idea of owning a bakery.
How The Golden Grain Landed on Our Radar
We recently asked our social media community a simple question: where can you find the best homemade bread in St. Pete? The comments answered, loudly. Again and again, people mentioned The Golden Grain. Her fans showed up for this St. Pete sourdough bakery in a big way, and we knew we had to check it out for ourselves.
So we asked owner Arica Fernandez to tell us her story. Here it is.
From “Absolutely Not!” to a St. Pete Cottage Bakery
About two years ago, a family member was experimenting with sourdough, and Arica’s kids tried fresh homemade bread. Then one of them asked her to make some. Arica had only made yeast bread twice in her life. Her answer? “Absolutely not!”
Feeding a starter and watching the rise sounded like one more thing in an already chaotic life. But her daughter kept asking, so Arica found a starter on Facebook Marketplace and gave it a try. Plenty of early loaves flopped, but she refused to quit, and soon she was baking multiple loaves a day. She shared the extras with friends, family, and neighbors, and their encouragement turned a hobby into a business.
The timing was not simple. Arica was in a very full season of motherhood. Her youngest child had been diagnosed with autism, and her days were, and still are, busy with therapies, appointments, and the everyday demands of raising four children. She wondered how she could take on a business on top of everything else. She did not have all the answers, but she knew she wanted to try.
Baking gave her something that is hers, outside of being a wife and mom. Starting The Golden Grain, she says, has been one of the best decisions she has ever made.
What Makes This St. Pete Sourdough Bakery Different?
The Golden Grain is a St. Pete sourdough bakery through and through. We asked Arica what sets it apart from other bakeries in the St. Pete area.
What do you specialize in, and what makes your bakery different?
“The Golden Grain specializes in all things sourdough! While we’re best known for our sourdough breads, nearly everything on our menu is sourdough-based, from cinnamon rolls and cookies to muffins and scones. I love finding ways to incorporate sourdough into a variety of baked goods, offering customers both traditional favorites and unique treats they might not expect.”
“What makes The Golden Grain special is that everything is rooted in the heart of a small, family-run business. I bake in small batches, putting care and attention into each product, and I love offering customers something handmade rather than mass-produced.”
How did you come up with the name?
“There isn’t a deep personal story behind the name The Golden Grain. When I was exploring ideas, I came across the name and immediately fell in love with the way it sounded… It felt warm, timeless, and inviting, which was exactly the kind of atmosphere I wanted my bakery to have.”

What to Order First at The Golden Grain
Arica’s most popular items, and her go-to picks for first-timers:
- Original sourdough loaf
- Cinnamon rolls
- Brown butter chocolate chip cookies
Want to go beyond the classics? She recommends the roasted garlic sourdough for a savory option, or the cheddar jalapeño sourdough if you like a little heat.
The Work Behind Every Loaf
Wednesdays are for prepping cookie dough, scones, granola, and candied pecans. Thursdays are dough days, with about two hours of shaping loaves and another hour on cinnamon rolls.
Fridays are the big bake. Arica usually starts around 9:30 a.m. after getting the kids to school, bakes the sourdough first so it can cool, and often does not finish until around 2 a.m. After a couple of hours of sleep, she is back up at 4:30 a.m. to start the cinnamon rolls, because she wants customers to get them warm and fresh. The farm stand opens at 8:30 a.m.
How to Order From The Golden Grain
The bakery alternates every other week: preorder pickups one week, a self-serve farm stand the next, with favorites available while supplies last.
- Order online: Browse the menu and order on the bakery’s Hotplate page.
- Delivery: Arica does not deliver herself, but she says Hotplate recently added a third-party delivery option at checkout in eligible areas.
- Custom orders: Birthdays, baby showers, gender reveals, and other celebrations. She asks for at least a couple of weeks’ notice, preferably more.
- Stay in the loop: Follow The Golden Grain on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. A monthly calendar pinned to the top of her profiles lists pop-ups, preorder dates, and farm stand openings.
A St. Pete Sourdough Bakery Powered by Community
Arica says the community has embraced The Golden Grain in ways she never imagined, from first-timers to weekly regulars to kind words online. Her favorite part is being a small piece of people’s celebrations, from gender reveals and birthday parties to holiday tables.
It has not all been easy. Learning social media was one of her biggest challenges, a whole new skill set for someone who just wanted to bake bread. But the biggest surprise, she says, is how much she has grown.
What is next? More recipe testing, plus local pop-ups and events, with the farm stand staying her main way to connect with customers. A storefront? She gets asked almost weekly, but for now she is happy growing as a cottage bakery.
