Before you drop cash on paint for your next weekend project, hold up. The Pinellas County Swap Shop in St. Pete gives away usable household products for free, and plenty of locals have never heard of it. Here is everything you need to know before you go.
What Is the Pinellas County Swap Shop?
The Pinellas County Swap Shop is a reuse program run by Pinellas County Solid Waste. It lives inside the county’s Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Center in north St. Petersburg.
Here is the idea. Residents drop off unwanted household chemical products, and the usable ones get a second life on the Swap Shop shelves. Less waste for the county, more savings for you.
And despite the name, you do not have to swap anything. Show up, browse, and take what you can use.
What Can You Get at the St. Pete Swap Shop?
The county describes it as a reuse program for household chemical products, such as paint, cleaners, and automotive fluids. Think leftover paint for touch-ups, cleaning supplies with plenty of life left, and fluids for vehicle maintenance.
Why bother? Supplies add up fast, and a gallon you did not have to buy is money back in your pocket.
Here is the catch. Availability can change by the minute, and quantities may be limited. If you need one exact paint color, you might strike out. If you are flexible, you could score big. Since inventory keeps shifting, a second visit can pay off.

What to Know Before You Go
- Bring a government-issued ID. Staff scan it to verify Pinellas County residency.
- Expect a possible wait. Only three customers are allowed inside at a time.
- It is free, and you do not need to bring anything to swap.
The county’s packing advice for drop-offs is smart for the ride home too: keep chemicals in the trunk or truck bed, away from passengers, and never mix them together.

Can You Drop Off Household Chemicals Too?
Yes, and that is free as well. The HHW Center accepts certain household chemicals from Pinellas County residents, including paint products, household cleaners, oil and antifreeze, lawn and garden chemicals, and pool and spa products.
Limits apply per vehicle per day. For example, you can bring up to 5 gallons each of oil and antifreeze, plus up to 20 one-gallon and 5 five-gallon containers of paint products.
The center does not take electronics, appliances, fire extinguishers, medicine, or vehicle batteries. It is for households only, so businesses should use the county’s business collection events. You will need your ID here too.
